Omega's note on resolutions is excellent; we make no such self promises on Vulcan. I find the practice to be very...unnecessary. It seems they are so rarely followed through on. Why bother at all?

[Ivy goes - reluctantly and not without reservations, but she goes. There's more mileage in obedience, at least for the time being, than there is in contrariness for its own sake. T'Pol hasn't done anything to actively aggravate her and she's reluctant to make any snap judgements about an alien species.

On the way over she also finds that her talents haven't been limited, either, at least not yet. So that's interesting. And she knocks on the door because well she has no way of knowing it's unlocked.]

Enter, [she calls, because why unlock the door if you intended to answer it. Besides, she's busy checking on her plomeek, making sure she hasn't over-watered it again. When Ivy comes in, T'Pol looks over her shoulder and offers a little not in greeting.] Thank you for coming.

[Ivy gives a slight nod in return, hands folded behind her back. She had certain plans in place for how she would deal with her first Warden but who and what T'Pol is has upset most of them. Still. She can adapt.]

Thank you for the invitation. [She glances at her 'gift', an earthenware pot half-filled with soil. The Admiral hadn't been altogether generous in fulfulling her requests for herself, not that she'd expected much.]

[Gesturing Ivy in, T'Pol settled in front of the kal'ta. She'd pulled out a spade before Ivy arrived, and she lifted it now.]

I assume this is as simple as it seems?

[Well right to work, just as she wants. T'Pol gets up, and the spade disappears to its spot in her closet.] Our hands, then? [She isn't too keen on that, but she doesn't want to upset Ivy so early on, either.]

[She slips her hands into the pot, close to the sides. Back home, she could have contracted the roots a little to make this less traumatic - hell, she could have convinced the kal'ta to crawl from one pot to the other - but here, the best she could do was help it take root in its new home.]

[T'Pol hesitates for a moment, but then she kneels across from her inmate, imitating her actions. She presses her lips together in a thin line in the process, but doesn't comment.]

Whether they keep them or not, New Years resolutions are mostly made because a year gives a definable starting point. You remember the exact date you set out to do something.

Even if your goal ends up difficult, the first of the year's a pretty logical starting point if you also want to gauge your success or when you came to a decision.

And how often are these resolutions held to? Have you had any success?

I don't really know. Some of 'em are big ones, some of them are little ones. I've learned a few languages thanks to New Years resolutions, at least.

In your experience, you've held to your resolutions more frequently than you've abandoned them?

Usually. But even if someone doesn't, they know exactly how long it took 'em before they gave up.
